On the Stratford side of the maunga it gets more rain than most of New Zealand; on the coast it gets the full westerly off the Tasman and the salt that comes with it. Get the roof right and nobody thinks about it again for thirty years. Get it wrong and it shows up as a stain on a ceiling two winters later.
Weather Guard Roofing is a family owned and operated roofing company based in New Plymouth, working the whole of the region. We started in October 2025 with a simple idea: turn up when we said we would, do clean work, and finish on the date we agreed. That is what people tell us they struggle to find, and it is the whole business.
We put new roofs on new builds and extensions, replace roofs that have reached the end of their life, and roof light commercial buildings - workshops, sheds, small retail and farm buildings. Longrun metal is most of what we do, because it is what suits Taranaki weather and Taranaki budgets best.
What we will not do is quote a roof we have not looked at properly. Anyone can give you a price per square metre over the phone, and it is worth almost nothing, because the cost of a roof is decided by the things you cannot see from the driveway: the timber under the old roof, how many penetrations there are, whether the flashings can be reused, and how the materials are going to get up there safely.

Usually within a few days. We measure properly, check the condition of the timber, the flashings and the penetrations, and photograph anything you cannot see from the ground.

Twenty minutes down the road from us on the northern flank of the mountain. Wet, exposed to the westerly, and with a lot of older weatherboard homes whose original corrugate has done sixty years and is now letting go around the nail heads.

The questions we get asked most often when we are standing in someone's driveway.
How much does a new roof cost in Taranaki?
It depends far more on the roof than on the house. The things that move the price are the pitch, how many valleys, hips and penetrations there are, whether scaffolding can go up easily, the condition of the timber underneath, and which roofing product you choose. A simple single-storey gable and a two-storey home with five valleys can differ by a factor of three for the same floor area. That is why we will not price a roof over the phone - give us an address and we will come and look, and give you a real number.
How long does a longrun roof last in Taranaki?
A correctly specified longrun steel roof will generally give you thirty years or more inland, and less on the coast unless it has been specified for it. That is the whole point of coastal grading: at Ōakura, Ōpunake or Waitara you want a different substrate and coating system to what is fine in Stratford. The single biggest thing that shortens any roof's life is a small leak nobody dealt with.
Do I need a building consent to re-roof my house?
Replacing a roof with a comparable product is usually exempt building work under Schedule 1 of the Building Act, but that is not universal - changing to a heavier or substantially different material, altering the structure, or work on a heritage building can all need consent. The safest answer is that it depends on your specific job. We will tell you what we think applies to yours and, when there is any doubt, point you at your district council to confirm before anything starts.
Can you replace a roof over winter?
Yes. Taranaki winters are wet rather than cold, and we roof year round. What changes is how we programme the work: we strip less at a time, watch the forecast more closely, and make sure the house is closed in and watertight before we leave each day. Winter is often a better time to book than the pre-Christmas rush.
Do you work outside New Plymouth?
Yes - all of Taranaki. New Plymouth is simply where we are based. Bell Block, Waitara and Inglewood are on our doorstep, Ōakura and Ōpunake are round the coast, and Stratford, Eltham, Hāwera and the south coast are an easy run down the highway.
